Photographic Themes

Throughout her career, Doris Ulmann developed many patterns within her work. As she traveled, Ulmann honed in on specific subjects, photographic techniques, and archival tendencies that carried through the majority of her career. The themes discussed here, although not a complete list, explore some of the ways in which Ulmann chose to portray the people and traditions she encountered during her life.

Listed here are many of the concepts prominent in Ulmann's photographs, as well as images exemplifying them. Each theme's page consists of a single annotated image which discusses the details within the photograph, as well as a selection of other works that fit within that concept.
