Berea College

Through Doris Ulmann's fascination with crafts and appalachian culture, she stumbled upon Berea College. Not only did Berea offer an extensive, all-access tour of appalachian craft-making, it enabled Ulmann to study the technique of appalachian crafts more closely. This topic was always one that interested Ulmann and Berea College was one of the best places she could've came, due to our deep roots in crafts. Although she did take images of regular student life interactions, she mostly focused on taking up-close images of students while they were creating crafts in order to show their technique. Ulmann later donated over 3000 of her images that she captured during her time in the Appalachian Region to Berea College. Today, Berea College has The Doris Ulmann Galleries to represent Berea's ideals of diversity, integrity, and inspiration.
