Soft Focus

Doris Ulmann used soft focus in order to highlight the important details of her work, or what she considered important. Usually, making it softer around the people she were capturing helped her viewers really focus on the individuals in her images, instead of their surroundings. This could be because the different emotions in each photograph were vital in order to tell a deeper story. By showing a more saddened or angry or happy face, viewers have the opportunity to formulate questions about each piece that she created. Ulmann made the main idea of each image be the focal point by using soft focus. Ulmann also used soft focus when capturing craft makers hands in order to really show what the crafts person was doing. This also supports the idea behind what Doris Ulmann wanted to signify through the use of soft focus.
